George Lenton, Johnny Cash, Crookers, Dan Black

K, it’s a short blog today, so let’s start with what is truly an amazing video from a man in the last few years of his life, the legend Johnny Cash doing NIN’s Hurt …”what have I become? My sweetest friend, everyone I know goes away in the end…..” truly an amazing rendition of an amazing song. His last ever album is due out sometime early this year, I seem to recall April being mentioned

…”you can have it all, my empire of dirt…”

Waste of taxpayers money? NASA launches plans for a single man plane
7 year old raises money for Haiti…how cool?

YAY, it's been a while but George Lenton has come out of his hiatus to give us more of his chilled mania driven genius:

Crookers
Transilvania (feat. Steed Lord)
You know that Crookers know how to bring the party. With anticipation building for the release of their debut album—the aptly named Tons of Friends is due out in March—“Transilvania” confirms that Crookers have lost not one ounce of their banger know-how.

Dan Black
Symphonies (feat. Kid Cudi)
Dan Black is poised to become the new face of indie hip-hop hybrids, and who better to show him the ropes than Kid Cudi. Cudi injects his patented easy verse into this edit of “Symphonies,” seamlessly flowing into the plaintive beats and melancholic rock that made the original tune a viral favorite for the past several months.

NEW Massive Attack, SMD, Ian Dury, Infight, Val Venosta, I'm not a Band, Diogenes Club, Dr Strangelove, Boy8Bit, METRIC, Hussle Club, Junip, Photek

What Dictators Listen To and if I listened to that shit, I TOO would commit genocide..I mean, Siff Pilchard (oops, I mean Cliff Richard), have you ever?

RIGHT, I was watching the awesome Japanorama clearly done before Wossie's fall from gwace, they were doing an awesome show on Samurai and it reminded me of this awesome video by Photek, really beautiful:

Check out the first of a few official remixes for bloggers from the new Massive Attack album 'Heligoland', dropping Feb 8th; 'Girl I Love You' remixed by She Is Danger... Enjoy :)

Cool, so I’m Not A Band sent me this to share with y’all:
Plasma – Crazy (I’m not a Band – Remix)
They'll be on their first UK Tour starting this Sunday - playing Birmingham, Manchester and London (dates can be found on their page).
And last but not least we got nominated as Myspace featured artist by New York band "Cobra Starship". You can vote at once a day;)

Following their thrilling success, the Diogenes Club returns for its second release combining Dob and Paul's effortless partnership. Their first EP 'Do You Know How To Feel It?' gained outstanding reviews online through portals such as Pitchfork, Sound Advice, Pop Stereo and The Hype Machine as well as being played by Pete Tong on Radio 1 and being described as 'the best I've heard in ages' by Andy Warburton (Nu Cool Show, Galaxy). Once again, it results in an excellent EP combining flair, tenacity and charm.

The '979' EP gathers 3 new exciting compositions. Spacey and hypnotic 'Tie Ourselves Around' woos a storm of emotion with bass-like resonances. Highs and lows are characterized by unfathomed, meaningful lyrics. The moodiness is broken by 'I Could Try To Explain' - an instant balearic feel-good track. It's driven and happy-go-lucky tempo are embellished with lush vocals striding with rhythm. Finally, 'Tete' is an atmospheric lullaby with eerie and delicate patterns that provoke a subtle, yet compelling uplift.

Boys Noize, Sick Boy, Deux Helix Mixtape, Plasma, We Love Machines, Embedded, Queen of Hoxton and a hilarious Scam

RIGHT, so yes, this post is light on music and heavy on words, but the SCAM thang at the bottom is brilliant, bunch of idiots think they can scam the scammed again so that they can “get back” their scammed money from the friendly “SCAM police” led by the RIGHT HONOURABLE REVEREND Brawn White, HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH yeah sure, I’m gonna send my details to you!!! ALSO, more importantly there’s a cool club night launching on the 22nd January at the awesome Queen Of Hoxton (great venue, had tremendous fun there with my fiend Keren and various nefarious ne’erdowells).

Boys Noize
Drummer
Boys Noize is well known for hard-hitting bangers, but “Drummer” is a needling killer. You can’t really dance to it in the traditional sense, but feel free to jerk around a bit before your brain begins to bleed.

SQUARE CAT LAUNCHES AT QUEEN OF HOXTON
Square Cat hits the Queen of Hoxton for 2010. A new London club night, it’s a bi-monthly appointment starting from the 22nd January in one of London’s best venues. The nights will feature some of the most unique and groundbreaking DJs from across the spectrum of electronic music, while the basement also showcases live acts you’ll be hearing about more and more - if you haven’t already started to do so.
For the launch night on Friday 22nd January…
Upstairs features a DJ set from The Broken Hearts. Well-known for their distinctive brand of spectacular DJing, they have played some of the most exclusive venues in London, as well as New York, Paris, Moscow and Milan. Their eclectic sets have been described by The Independent as, "a Hollywood musical on hallucinogenics." Time Out say; "Turntable Goddesses Amber and Nisha are guaranteed to pull out a plethora of delights from both the DJ crate and the dressing-up box".
Supporting is London based DJ and promotion Stop.Look.Listen - spanning the breadth of quality disco, house and soul, spinning everywhere from the beach bars of Ibiza to Hackney's underground basement parties.
In the basement, we welcome The Good Natured. Sarah McIntosh is an 18-year old from Berkshire. Her debut EP ‘Warriors’ is four songs, each of them an electro-pop gem, showing such a total understanding of the genre’s nuances and emotional/emotionless contradictions that she arrives as a compelling new talent. Picked up on by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens and Tom Robinson, songs off “Warriors” received extensive play on Radio 1 and BBC 6Music. The EP also spawned features in the likes of Artrocker, The Guardian and The Sunday Times (Breaking Act). With rave reviews, Sarah found herself being compared to the likes of a young Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, and lyrically to Morrissey.
Alongside The Good Natured are Duologue, a four-piece band from London. With their music featured on the new series of Skins, having performed their first NME radio live session and featuring, amongst other things, in Disorder Magazine and QX as ‘Ones To Watch’, there is no doubt Duologue are going places.
Our DJ headliner is Krust. At the creative heart of the drum and bass scene for more than 15 years, Krust was one of the founders of the Full Cycle/Reprazent collective alongside Roni Size and DJ Die, breaking through into mass culture winning the Mercury Music Prize in 1997, while still managing to remain at the cutting edge of contemporary urban music.
Closing the night is Pariah, one of the most interesting and promising DJs hitting the London scene. He has work coming on R&S Records and his discography already includes a beautiful remix of The XX’s ‘Basic Space’
Season Five’s Snugfelix provides DJ support from 9pm.
Square Cat
21:00 | 02:00, Friday 22nd January 2010. The Queen of Hoxton, 1 Curtain Road, Hoxton, London, EC2A 3JX

Guilty Hands won £15,000 to record an album from slicethepie - a site where listeners earn money
for reviewing tracks, which they then use to invest in bands (the
highest reviewed bands are put up for financing). Bands then have to
gain £15,000 in investment both from site users and fans who invest
their own cash, and any that reach the £15,000 target get the money.
We also won a Les Paul guitar (Gibson were sponsoring this particular
showcase). Some news here -

Well done guys, hard work pays off, as well as awesome choooons!

Owl City
Fireflies (Marlow Remix)
This remix by Marlow could have been a lot murkier, more vicious, but it retains Owl City’s gape-mouthed piano burblings, and the swooning noises that come out of Young’s mouth are hardly messed with.

Crookers
We Love Animals (feat. Soulwax & Mixhell)
Geekazoids take note: evidently the central synth riff here is a Soulwax concoction, the drums are attributed to Mixhell, and the ensuing layers and mixing a Crookers/Soulwax tag-team. It’s also the first track on the forthcoming Crookers album, Tons Of Friends.

Adam Green
What Makes Him Act So Bad
It's weird to think of Adam Green as one of the most prolific songwriters of the decade, but he undoubtedly is. Judging from “What Makes Him Act So Bad,” his newest—and sixth— LP, Minor Love, contains more idiosyncratic Lou Reedisms about nonsensically cute things, like radios with feelings. Also, guitar solos!

A Place to Bury Strangers
Keep Slipping Away (South Central Remix)
Noise-rock doesn’t get more melodic than A Place to Bury Strangers, and in this industrial take of “Keep Slipping Away,” the musicality in the vocals stays strong and true, even as the smack-happy synths and barbed-wire riffs advance into a full-blown riot.
A Place to Bury Strangers - Keep Slipping Away (South Central Remix)

Dan Black
Symphonies (Hot City Remix)
This refix of Dan Black’s “Symphonies” from Hot City is also more of a full reimagining—the arms-open dolor of the original transfused into scrappy, palpitating club nosh.
