Eartha Kitt Dies from Cancer, aged 81:(

This woman was a REAL character, larger than life and twice as sultry. The world is a sadder place today without her in it. She did live large however and was loved by generations of fans:

Eartha Kitt, the sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died. Skip related content
Related photos / videos Eartha Kitt dies after cancer fight Family friend Andrew Freedman said Kitt, 81, died of colon cancer. She was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Kitt, a self-proclaimed "sex kitten" famous for her catlike purr, was one of America's most versatile performers, winning two Emmys and a third nomination. She also was nominated for several Tonys and two Grammys.

Her career spanned six decades, from her start as a dancer with the famed Katherine Dunham troupe to cabarets and acting and singing on stage, in movies and on television.

She persevered through an unhappy childhood as a mixed-race daughter of the southern US and made headlines in the 1960s for denouncing the Vietnam War during a visit to the White House. Through the years, Kitt remained a picture of vitality and attracted fans less than half her age even as she neared 80.

When her book Rejuvenate, a guide to staying physically fit, was published in 2001, Kitt was featured on the cover in a long, curve-hugging black dress with a figure that some 20-year-old women would envy. She also wrote three autobiographies.

Once dubbed the "most exciting woman in the world" by Orson Welles, she spent much of her life single, though brief romances with the rich and famous peppered her younger years.

After becoming a hit singing Monotonous in the Broadway revue New Faces of 1952, Kitt appeared in Mrs Patterson in 1954-55. Some references say she earned a Tony nomination for Mrs Patterson, but only winners were publicly announced at that time.

Her first album, RCA Victor Presents Eartha Kitt, came out in 1954, featuring such songs as I Want to Be Evil, C'est Si Bon and the saucy gold digger's theme song Santa Baby.

Kitt also acted in movies, playing the lead female role opposite Nat King Cole in St Louis Blues in 1958 and more recently appearing in Boomerang and Harriet The Spy in the 1990s. On television, she was the sexy Catwoman on the popular Batman series in 1967-68, replacing Julie Newmar who originated the role.

Grafton Primary – Records for the righteous
Grafton Primary are brothers Josh and Ben Garden from Sydney. From their very cool new album Eon on Resolution Music.
Ladyhawke – My Delerium
The crowd went off at Nevereverland in Melbourne when she played this track, I think it was her last track of her set, she's like a blonde Joan Jett, only from New Zealand, and indie, and stuff. Rock Chick, yeah
Van She – Memory Man
Sydney's Van She with a cool track from their new album, they were great live despite the fact that they opened up proceedings to only a few hundred people, a pity because they played a blinder of a set
Tame Impala – Desire Be Desire Go
I was SOOO bummed that they were bumped off the set for Melbourne, would have loved to see them, this is from their new EP, check the ModShop link above to get this as well as Ladyhawke etc:)

Susumu Yokota – Golden Years
Lord Bowie covered, this is from a cool album I picked up in Polyester Records on Brunswick Street. It's calledLife Beyond Mars Bowie Covered, it features the likes of Au Revoir Simone, Heartbreak, Paper Jones, Joakim and Disco etc, VERY cool to hear Bowie reinvented
Maps – Don’t Fear (Fantastic Mr Fox Remix)
Lovely remix by the Fantastic Mr Fox of Mute's Maps, giving it a bit of a Hip Hop Trip Hop Turntablist flava,

New band from the City of Churches (Adelaide), their best kept secret. Bumblebeez – Clubb Clubb
This is from their 2007 offering on Modular "Prince Umberto and the Sister od Ill" I WANT these people to take over the world!! Please?

Pop Will Eat Itself – Ich Bien Ein Auschlander
CLASSIC track from the 90's, when them Grebos' went to Interscope and onto Trent Reznors label, came from the "Dos Dedos Mes Amigos" album, still a floor filler
Cazals – To Cut A Long Story Short (Vicarious Bliss Mellotron mix)
Orchestral and chilled remake of the Spandau Ballets New Wave/Romantic classic from the very early 80's, when they wore their Kilts, The Cazals do the track justice

Miss this at your peril!!!!

"For only two people, they throw one hell of a hot party" - Metro Pop

"...Anthems for husky straight dudes who aren't ashamed to dance" - SPIN

"The Presets jump back on the dancefloor and aim for the cosmos with their latest. "Yippyo-yay' and "My People" will light up the night" - XLR8R

"Presets don't just make electronic dance music... They throw a lot of heavy musical content into the stew, seemingly at times to convey that they're capable of being "serious" musicians- not that that kills the joy..." - LA WEEKLY

"(The Presets) throw down fists full of bouncing beats... Shiny as silver ink, tracks such as 'Kicking and Screaming' and 'My People' celebrate diversity and dancing." - Chicago Free Press

"I've seen plenty of concerts in my 36 years on earth - and my 21 years as a music writer - so please forgive my sincere hyperbole here: Last night I may very well have experienced the hottest show of my life." - Just Out

"The Presets revel in the darker, more cosmic realm of dance music while still having fun and involuntarily getting people in the mood to move. There's also punk and new wave elements, but just don't call them "indietronica". - Rolling Stone

"Apocalypse WOW! - a sold-out sea of fist-pumping, the music off of the Presets' most recent album Apocalypso inspiring dance moves from the most complacent of hipsters." - Blackbook

"Compelling evidence that their famed live act translates to the recorded medium. The Presets are beaut." - MIX MAG

"An electrifying set... The crowd's frivolous dancing and singalong was no shock in this case: absurdly catchy tracks extracted from the duo's latest album Apocalypso intensified as well as delighted." - Big Shot

"...fist pumping, bass throbbing set that coerced the crowd into gleeful, pseudo-violent dancing." -
The Eagle.

"Apocalypso could thrust The Presets to mainstream success" - The Edge

"Imagine Depeche Mode circa Violator with a twist of Pet Shop Boys' pop purity" - Anthem

"The Presets lead the wave of Aussie dance music" - AM New York

"Apocalypso is not lacking in singles, led by the lush and gorgeous "this Boy's In Love", the shades-of-Devopodium-pounding of "My People" and the rocker "Talk Like That" - Minneapolis Tribune.

"Having created major inroads in their homeland, The Presets are poised to gain similar recognition Stateside and beyond..." AOL Music

"The best sound set-up we've ever experienced!" - DC-ist.

"The Presets had a strong outing, with a minimalist drums-and-synth setup providing a big return on party noir." LA Times.

"Their set wonderfully straddles the line between a traditional rock show and DJ set... the entire venue dashed and jumped around like, well, ravers in a friendly mosh pit." URB

2700 stash of Cannabis found in grave in the Gobi Desert, STILL GREEN

CRIKEY, I saw this this morning and had to share it with you all, and it was STILL green, must have been some powerful shit:

Stash for the afterlife: A photograph of a stash of cannabis found in the 2,700-year-old grave of a man in the Gobi Desert. Scientists are unsure if the marijuana was grown for more spiritual or medical purposes, but it's evident that the man was buried with a lot of it.
By Jennifer Viegas

updated 1:19 p.m. ET Dec. 3, 2008
Nearly two pounds of still-green plant material found in a 2,700-year-old grave in the Gobi Desert has just been identified as the world's oldest marijuana stash, according to a paper in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany.
A barrage of tests proves the marijuana possessed potent psychoactive properties and casts doubt on the theory that the ancients only grew the plant for hemp in order to make clothing, rope and other objects.
They apparently were getting high too.
Lead author Ethan Russo told Discovery News that the marijuana "is quite similar" to what's grown today.
"We know from both the chemical analysis and genetics that it could produce THC (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid synthase, the main psychoactive chemical in the plant)," he explained, adding that no one could feel its effects today, due to decomposition over the millennia.
Russo served as a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Botany while conducting the study. He and his international team analyzed the cannabis, which was excavated at the Yanghai Tombs near Turpan, China. It was found lightly pounded in a wooden bowl in a leather basket near the head of a blue-eyed Caucasian man who died when he was about 45.
"This individual was buried with an unusual number of high value, rare items," Russo said, mentioning that the objects included a make-up bag, bridles, pots, archery equipment and a kongou harp. The researchers believe the individual was a shaman from the Gushi people, who spoke a now-extinct language called Tocharian that was similar to Celtic.
Scientists originally thought the plant material in the grave was coriander, but microscopic botanical analysis of the bowl contents, along with genetic testing, revealed that it was cannabis.

The size of seeds mixed in with the leaves, along with their color and other characteristics, indicate the marijuana came from a cultivated strain. Before the burial, someone had carefully picked out all of the male plant parts, which are less psychoactive, so Russo and his team believe there is little doubt as to why the cannabis was grown.
What is in question, however, is how the marijuana was administered, since no pipes or other objects associated with smoking were found in the grave.
"Perhaps it was ingested orally," Russo said. "It might also have been fumigated, as the Scythian tribes to the north did subsequently."
Although other cultures in the area used hemp to make various goods as early as 7,000 years ago, additional tomb finds indicate the Gushi fabricated their clothing from wool and made their rope out of reed fibers. The scientists are unsure if the marijuana was grown for more spiritual or medical purposes, but it's evident that the blue-eyed man was buried with a lot of it.

"As with other grave goods, it was traditional to place items needed for the afterlife in the tomb with the departed," Russo said.
The ancient marijuana stash is now housed at Turpan Museum in China. In the future, Russo hopes to conduct further research at the Yanghai site, which has 2,000 other tombs.

Design Is A Good Idea

Hey peeps, I have been wanting to post this for a while but keep forgetting, hahaha, (it's been an insane year) this is a Facebook Group set up by my Fiend Bruce Cowie, a genius designer and all round Good Bloke. Myself and my then girlfriend used to take him and his then girlfiend clubbing at (their) tender age of 14 and they used to stay at our place in Hillbrow on weekends, I used to sell him Einsterzende Neubauten and Nick Cave vinyl back in 1990 when I used to be the resident black clad dude at Hillbrow Records. Always back then this extremely intelligent boy (now a man) always looked to push the boundries, to question and to most importantly listen to the Universe. He ventured into music and DJ'ing and was startlingly brilliant at both. As good as his Design, and as you can see, his Design is pretty damn amazing:

Some SA Electronica Disco Mashup Madness for you Richard the Third, Kliktrak, Dirtyolddisco

I promised another post about Richard the Third, this is part one, I will do one on the album later, however, here's two tracks from the album, the Bride Reunion is an earlier version pre Album. Dancing with the Dj's Girlfriend is the wicked opening track of the album Third World from the Sun and it sets the tone for an awesome sometimes leftfield space disco electro romp of an album moving through all the emotions from low down and dirty to uplifted bliss.
The next lot is from the mind of Richard Anthony Smith aka Kliktrak
I have also included a relatively recent mashup my friend Rick Disco and his partner in grime Themba did of Chromeo vs Digitalism

Richard the Third - Dancing With The DJ's Girl (Ft Tutus)
Richard the Third feat Bride Reunion - How Can You Tell

Kliktrak - C.U.B.U.
Kliktrak - Coresce
Kliktrak - Chikpea
Chromeo vs Digitalism - Fancy Pogowork (dirtyoldman bootleg)

In the meantime, don't forget Richard the Third is on tour with MtKidU, Jacob Israel VJ Chinxxx and fellow reprobates coming to a town near you check HERE for details if you have allready forgotten

Richard the Third also kindly gave me this mix he recently did on 5FM
Bi-Polar Molecule Mix

Tracklisting:

1. Fire through the Window – Just Like you Are (Richard the Third Remix)
2. MGMT - Electric Feel (James Rutledge Remix)
3. Holy Ghost! – Hold On

Speaking of fantastic this cool track from MtKidU is a slice of electronica from Jozi, if you haven't yet, go to Electrotrash to the download section and pick this track as well as many others including some Richard the third, Kliktrak featured below as well as Phonje etc, don't say I don't give you things
Kliktrak – Electrospheric edit 11
Durban's own electronica genius Richard with this epic piece of coolness
Frittenbude – Pandabar
From new label Audiolith from Berlin, very cool strange electro track from possibly one of the coolest cities on the planet
The Killers – Human (Ocelot rmx Alternative Live Edit)
Wicked remix of their new single all Vocoded and electrified, sounds very Faint-like, the original I still maintain is actually Alphaville in disguise, honest
Krink – 01:00am
Another awe inspiringly great track from Berlins cool new label Audiolith Audiolith, thanks to B-Electro for the tracks, head over to the left of the screen, click on B-Electro and go look for these tracks, well worth the effort
Trackademics – Enjoy what you do (Shadow Dancer rmx)
Magic track from Trackademics with the Wham lyric cleverly deployed for maximum danceability and amusement
Mystery Jets – Half in love with Elizabeth (Foamo Rmx)
very cool Foamo remix of the Mystery Jets, nice and subtle re-working
Tame Impala – Half full glass of wine (Canyons Drunken Rage rmx)
Leave me no choice but to plot my revenge, psyche rock heaven
Wild Beasts – Vigil For a Fuddy Duddy
Smithsesque band from Leeds via Kendal the Lake District as their mySpace page says, reminds me of another band I used to listen to in the 80’s, struggling to remember their name, I think it was The Assembly, also operatic type falsetto vocals
, also brings to mind Alladin Sane era Bowie at his most theatrical, with a bit of Brett Anderson thrown in for good measure
We Have Band – Oh! (Andrew Friendly Fires Remix)
From Kitsune's latest compilation, vol 6, three Londoners with this cool Friendly
Fires remix, there are qquite a few mixes of this floating around the blogosphere

Richard the Third – Dancing with the DJ’s Girl (Richard vs the Tutus)
Another great track from Richard the Third together with Joburg Indie gods Desmond and the Tutu's,

Maki Rocker – Hello Powerface
Oslo based band, nice! Band Members: Martin the Maki Rocker
BUT!!!! Sometimes The Buttharp, Miss Rebel, Ill.St.M or Mr. Mushkile help out!
Influences: Ray Smuckles and fried duck with peanut sauce
Sounds Like: A death rattle you can dance to
Record Label: Betu Records

Richard the Third – Soul Trader feat Themba January
Yip, another brilliant track from Richard, he wants to look more gangsta but fears he is too Emo
Division Kent – In the Headlights (Melnyk is behind the wheel rmx)
Depeche Modish type remix of Division Kents In the Headlights. Long and blissful
Cabaret Voltaire – Sensoria (Bloody Beetroots vs Sir Billy Experience Rmx)
I played this a while back and was going through some old tracks and rediscovered this one,
autoKratz – Stay the Same (You Love her Coz She’s Dead Remix)
Kitsune's autoKratz YLHCSD treatment
Sia – Buttons (CSS Remix)
This wasn't on the first release of her latest album but the original has been included on later pressings, its all CSS'd here,
CSS – Move (Cut Copy Remix)
This mix wouldn't sound out of place on a DFA compilation,
George Lenton vs King Blues – Come Fi Di Youth Rmx)
Awesome dubby track from Mr Lenton vs the Reggae punk kings
Tiga and Zyntherius – Sunglasses at Night (Black Devil Dub)
And old favourite, can't say more about this, love it and always will
Egotronic – Es muss stets hell fur Gottes Auge sein
Another wicked track from the Berlin label Audiolith, see below for info on the label
Panico – Illumination (Jackson Remix)
Mad industrial NIN style insane track, ripped and shredded by Jackson

Richard the Third , MtKidU , Electrolove , Frittenbude , Krink , Trackademics , Mystery Jets , Tame Impala , Wild Beasts , We Have Band , Maki Rocker , Desmond and the Tutus , Division Kent , Richard the First Facebook , autoKratz , Cabaret Voltaire , Sia , Cansei Deser Sexy , George Lenton , The King Blues , Tiga , Egotronics , Panico

Got this from B-Electro:
Who is Audiolith?
We are a record label, like many others are, but we're a whole lot more than that. We are the baby of Lars Lewerenz, who began to release our music, the music of his friends, his adopted family, in 2003. Which was a good decision, we've celebrated ourselves for this everywhere in the meantime. Cuz Audiolith Youth is everywhere. And we're there with it and down with it. We're coming to your town, and we're listening to what you have to say, and we'll see each other in the streets and we'll be wearing the same t-shirt. Your style is important to us, cause you like our mix. So you become part of it, cause everything fun and authentic goes, cause we're don't dig getting in trouble but rather get on parking lots. On which we rave. We drink our beer. But don't close our heads. We dance and sing songs. Cause we're way hotter than the crap they try to flog at you in Discounterland. Don't listen to them. Loosen up. Blow your mind with good music

Jensen Sportag

Received this in my mail from Jensen Sportag who have KINDLY allowed me to share this with all you lovely people, as well as some cool tracks for ya, music for a Summer evening after the rain as the party gets going, on a beach...smooth:

Just wanted to reach out today and tap your shoulder while I'm wearing my Jensen Sportag gloves. Oh these? Jensen Sportag is the capricious little electro-pop band made by me, Austin Wilkinson, and my friend Elvis Craig. We're from Nashville, our first EP is called Sergio and it's out on December 2nd.

Imagine Prince, Aphex Twin, and Wesley Willis all wantin ya, sayin 'Baby I'm yours...' and such. Well, here are some other items of note. Paw Tracks is down - Ariel Pink contributed vocals and cover art to our self-titled 2007 debut, and new-signing Dent May recently booked us for a private show at his Mississippi ranch and invited a collaboration. I think we'll do it. We also have a great fan in Domino Records' Max Tundra who recently name-checked Jensen in an Earplug interview, included us in his forthcoming remix LP, and asked us to open on his forthcoming tour.

But before the Tundra dates, we're doing some shows with the always rockin Ghostland Observatory in Atlanta and Nashville. We've already played with LCD Soundsystem, Junior Boys, Adult., Girl Talk, and many more. We can honestly say we have nothing against them. Dates, EP tracklist, album ZIP, photos, artwork, and a pair of MP3s are below. Whew. Please tap us back if you need anything.

Yours always,
Jensen Sportag

the shows

1st Hour of Show

2nd Hour of Show

Tonights Show featuring Far Och Son, Architecture In Helsinki, Cutout Collective, Tales of the Son, Hard On, Tame Impala etc

These New Puritans – Numerology (aka Numbers)
Fantastic track from the Beat Pyramid album, these nutters from Southend have cooked up a quite astounding album, a successor to the Klaxxons
Does it Offend You Yeah? – We are Rockstars
From their new album, this Electro Romp of a track is awesome, they ARE Rockstars, all twisted and fucked, yeah
The Presets – This Boys In Love
From the Appocalypso album, lurvely:)
"I stole the keys to the skies,
We’ll leave this place for the final time,
No crying words, no goodbyes,
Yes tonight we’re burning all the tough times.

Drown all the fears that we had,
These are the things that we’ll never understand.
This time fight fire with fire,
Cause baby tonight, the world belongs to you and I.

This Boy’s in love,
Love
This boys in love
Under city, under city lights
..."

Far Och Son – Panik (Tony Senghore Remix)
Most BRILLIANT track from this new Swedish outfit consisting of Frej Larsson
Simon Gärdenfors, they are on the Hybris label, SO phat this track
Far Och Son – Panik (Phatzoo Remix)
Tale of The Son – B
This piece of Instrumental genius is from the Deconstruction stable, fronted by A Boy Named Goo, expect MANY things from these guys in 2009, part of the NEW Jozi Revolution
Architecture In Helsinki – That Beep (Radioclit’s French Mix)
Australias Architecture with a wicked remix by London based Radioclit, check out their RADIOCLIT LONDON CLUB RESIDENCY : Secousse @ Notting Hill Arts club every 2nd friday of the month
Cutout Collective – Bloodlines (Jacob Israel Remix)
ANOTHER from the Deconstruction Stable, an old favourite of mine, remixed by the fantastic Jacob Israel, I was at the Woods on Saturday night watching Email Chekkerr and VJ Flikker of CoC storm the dancefloor, astounding, long live Ableton Live
Clinic – Tomorrow (DFA Remix)
What I love about DFA remixes, they are just so damn sexy, this is the slinkiest bassline of the last I don't know how long, its a builder
Gossip – Listen Up (Arthur Baker Remix)
Lovely house remix of Gossips staple from the Standing in.. album of 2006
Lykke Li – Little Bit (AutoErotique Bootleg Rmx)
There's a whole lot of sexual refferences in the post today, what with Radioclit, AutoErotique, Hard on et al, heh, what am I trying to tell myself???
Bumblebeez – Freak Your Loneliness
Rocker from Aussies Beeeeeezzz, stomps harder than a hard thing stomping hard, yeah!!!

Gang of Four – Anthrax (Faultline Remix)
Gang of Four, pure genius, so far ahead of its time, the blueprint for the likes of LCD Soundsystem et al.
Joy Division – Wilderness
And the blueprint for SO MANY bands from all over, one of the only bands that Nick Cave loved when he first came to London and was famously so dissapointed with the state of the music in the UK back then, the other band he loved was Mark E Smith's The Fall, funnily enough, both bands are from Manchester, so too is Manchester United, GREAT place Manchester, hahahah. This is from their astounding debut Unknown Pleasures
These New Puritans – Colours
Another track from the amazing newish album from the Puritans
Tame Impala – Skeleton Tiger
Aussie Psychedelic Rock on the Modular label, pretty as fuck, love it, they are really making waves now, another one to watch for 2009 as they go global

Budapests actress/muso Peterfy all fidgeted up sexy style, who DOESN'T like a fine cut body?
Dardanelles – Of Course You Said (Riot in Belgium Remix)
Another classic Riots remix of the Dardonelles allready brilliant song Of Course You Said
Plus Move - Boss
Plus Move hail from Austin Texas, they are on the Expansion Team Records label,
Rufus Wainwright – Tiergarten (Supermayer Remix)
A 13 minute epic remix of Rufus's classic Tiergarten, stellar
Simian Mobile Disco – System
This is one of my favourite SMD tracks, it makes me think of all that was good about the Rave culture when I was involved in the very early to mid 90's, the track builds breaks, trances yet electro's, its unbelievable, and its only a bonus track on the Attack... album, blew my socks off when i first heard it very loud in my car after i bought it
Boys Noize – Don’t Believe the Hype
I can't get enough of this track, it rocks so hard, in as dark an Electro Intellitekno way as possible, I am not much one for genre's and labelling music so all I will call this is amazing
Simian Mobile Disco – System (cont.)

Hard On - Automatic
Germany's horny bastards from Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany T!t - The Bitch Dick - The Brain Ass - The Heart Gingahead - Special Guest MAD, yeah
