Fever Ray and Diamond Watch Wrists....

By now you’re probably familiar with Fever Ray, the solo project from Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife. “Keep The Streets Empty For Me,” is what could be described as game-hunting tundra music—primal, minimalist beats (with almost no snares) paired with little more than Andersson’s shamanic wisp.

Onward Push Me Out”, the first track to surface from the Diamond Watch Wrists—a side project between Prefuse 73 and Nick Hill (via Warp Records)—is a really dubby slice of layered vocals, saline Strats, and Hill’s consistently crisp stickwork.

Black Drawing Chalks plus MANY others, we love you long time....repeatedly

Black Drawing Chalks' three paragraph "bio" is pretty clear. These are four Brazilian dudes who like to drink and fuck. When you think of Brazil (and ignore the favelas) it's pretty easy to focus on drinking and fucking too. And Black Drawing Chalks churn out music made for drinking and fucking. This is off-the-hook, no nonsense rock of the heavy kind, crunching guitars, undeniably loaded bass, unrelenting thrashing drums and the kind of sneering vocal that can only be delivered by someone who is serious when he says, "I'm a beast, I'm a gun." Black Drawing Chalks are playing two more shows in Canada before fleeing the cold to return to South America; if you're north of the border, you'd be crazy not to get sweaty with this foursome.

The Ropes Kitty Get Down Video and Kid Sister

Social Experiment #5 : A courage metaphor. The Ropes - "Kitty Get Down" Video by Andi Krop

We have received a lot of emails asking if we could clarify the message of this song. We usually feel lyrics should speak for themselves and can mean different things to different people, but we will make an exception here.

In short:
No. Kitty is not a song about a real cat.

"Kitty" is a metaphor for anyone who has ever been scared or intimidated by the world.
After realizing that everyone else is also hiding and climbing their own metaphorical trees, Kitty finds the strength to get down and face fears. This is the only choice because if Kitty doesn't make the change, no one else will. If you are like Kitty, maybe it's time to get down.

The Ropes

NYC based duo The Ropes are vocalist/bassist Sharon Shy and multi-instrumentalist Toppy (known for playing drums with the guitar hanging around his neck). Notorious for their engaging lyrics, The Ropes have toured extensively throughout the US and UK, opening for acts such as The Used, Innerpartysystem, The Matches, and others.

The Ropes have released an EP titled Cry to the Beat and a full length album What They Do For Fun, both produced by Nic Hard (The Bravery, The Church) and Toppy.

New tour dates coming soon...
***Thanks to Natalie for the heads up***

Meanwhile:
Kid Sister - Get Fresh (Alex Gopher Remix)

Kid Sister is Chicago. She makes rap music and works at a children's clothing store slanging bibs and teething rings. Yes, her hype man J2K ... (more) of Flosstradamus is her real brother, and yes that does rule. Together they took the Chicago music scene by storm rocking parties and causing all around dancefloor mayhem, and have spent the last year rocking shows from the sweatiest, chic-est basement parties in Paris to the main stage of Coachella. Now that "Pro Nails" is hitting MTV and radio across the country, there's no denying that Kid Sis is taking this

Jensen Sportag Jackie

Hey peeps, a while back I featured Part 1 of this album, the lovely lads have now sent part 2 and here is a track from it. Enjoy:

Hola (means bonjour) Greg!

Austin of Jensen Sportag calling. Because you're a connoisseur of the highest caliber, you posted on our Sergio EP and we appreciate that about you. And as promised, here's our most accurate simulations of pop music yet; Part 2 of our Perfect Strangers EP series- Jackie. We worked hard making sure this one is unique so we don't waste anyone's time or dime. We even put in a remix from Max Tundra, our good buddy and one of pop music's most scriptural practitioners.

1 - Jackie: The title track is celebratory with a central theme of desire and shifts musically between 3 compositional quotations from pop rock. It is lyrically fashioned after the American girl tribute song (i.e Oh Sheila, Joanna, Sussudio, etc).

2 - Victim: This one has an overtly sexual message with musical references to early electro rap and epic soul.

3 - Cocktease: San Fransisco house and power pop provide setting for this girl gone bad story. (i.e. Runaround Sue, Maneater, Girl Gone Bad. etc).

+ Bonus Materials:
4 - Jackie (Jensen's Arpeggio Mix)
5 - Victim (Live Version)
6 - Cocktease (Jensen's Cockcuts Remix)
7 - Jackie (Justin Kase Remix)
8 - Cocktease (Max Tundra Remix)
9 - Jackie (Sats+Sojourn Remix)

Jackie Cover Art:

Jackie MP3: Jensen Sportag - Jackie
Jackie ZIP: Jensen Sportag - Jackie ZIP
Pitchfork Premieres Cocktease (Max Tundra Remix): Pitchfork Media Jensen Sportag - Cocktease (Max Tundra Remix) Stream>

That Max Tundra remix of "Cocktease" is coming out on Domino Records this spring. We'll be releasing lots more music throughout the year including parts 3 & 4 of Perfect Strangers, a collaboration project with Dent May (Pawtracks) and many reissues from the MIDISPORT vault. We have some odd shows lined up with Max Tundra, Gary War, Junior Boys, Justin Kase and Ghostland Observatory.

Sealed with a kiss,
Jensen Sportag

Kyle Chipman new Album Left Alone In The Think Tank free download, coz he loves you

Introducing Kyle Chipman, he has kindly written two Biographies for you, one is true the other one not, can YOU guess which is true? Check below for a link to download the REALLY cool album:

Bio 1:
An award winning photographer, internationally published writer, multi-albummed composer and uncharted video artist, Kyle Chipman is the Goethe for Generation Reset. Hailing from Chicago, Kyle began his existence as a classical violist, receiving numerous accolades, competing in countless chamber competitions and performing with the illustrious Disney Young Musician’s Symphony Orchestra before he had reached teen-age. At the height of his classical prowess, Kyle switched his focus to theatre, becoming a member of the Piven Theatre’s Young People’s Company and performing in the Second City High School Ensemble before attending New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Being schooled at the Stella Adler Studio for Acting in New York, Kyle left the city to spend four and a half months in Shanghai as a vanguard theatre artist, studying Chinese Opera at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Since then, Kyle has continued writing, composing, photographing and video-ing at any and every turn. His most recent album is the impending chart-topper “Left Alone in the Think Tank,” available for download at DOWNLOAD the ALBUM HERE.

Bio 2:
The offspring of the God Hermes and a beautiful but mortal mill-worker, Kyle Chipman was born in the precarious half-state of Demi-God; not quite mortal, and not quite im-. Banished from Mt. Olympus after a disastrous pass at Aphrodite, Zeus threw Kyle far into the future (now the present), where he was forced to conform to the societal norms of the hereafter (the present). After fruitlessly seeking refuge in the ether kingdoms of Asgard, Elysium and the Chinvat Bridge, Kyle recently relocated to Los Angeles, where he will not reside for very long. Whatever the future (future) holds, he will stay true to the vow to use his super-strength only for Truth and Right, and never for the stygian darkness of Hate. He is also able to absolve sin.

Now enjoy my pretties:)

Handsome Fur and The Soft Pack

And because I have MAD love for you all, and so too does RCRDLBL, here are two new songs for you:

Handsome Fur’s (Alexei Perry and Dan of Wolf-Parade) “I’m Confused,” is one of the Face Control’s “rockers” and also the best Suicide song the Cramps never wrote.
Handsome Furs - I'm Confused

“Red Headed Girl” speaks gold of the new record we assume is currently being assembled by The Soft Pack. We’re not usually into punk bands doing the acoustic thing, but because these guys sound like busking Jonathan Richman types, they are transporting us to a boardwalk ten Sundays from now and we are into that.
The Soft Pack - Red Headed Girl (Acoustic)

It's ONLY because I love you

Go Go Bar closed for a while

A sad thing happened on friday night when I was playing at the The Go Go Bar in Newtown, seems as if their is a new Sherriff in town and he seems to want to exert his Draconian hold over our much beloved city, especially Newtown where some of the coolest venues reside, Go Go Bar being probably the coolest. Well, the Go Go Bar is currently closed for all of us as they are undergoing "Renovations". Now this has kinda been forced upon them as the Hawaii 5:0 came aknocking on many a venues door on Friday night, closing them down and taking their keys (somehow I am sure that that contravenes MANY a bylaw etc, not that the Snouted Pinkies care much, because in our country, there are certain institutions that are clearly ABOVE the law, namely the pohlees and our lovely government which will soon be run by a rapist and a fraudster all rolled into one fat fuck named jacob zuma (his name does not warrant capital letters, he's a dick)).

The Go Go Bar has fast become a venue that is not afraid to experiment, putting on events that push the boundaries with all the coolest underground talent this city and other cities have to offer, even hosting international mofo's on the odd (sic) occassion!! I have been DJ'ing there recently and it is a lovely venue lovingly run and owned by Shaun, the lovely Kezia and Kevin. They have made it a sumptuous place for the dissaffected to sit their wary arses down, have a good blether and then to perhaps mayhap have a good boogie down to the funky DJ's downstairs. It is complimented by the coolest staff ever, some of which used to reside at Tokyo Star when it was cool, pre-Greenside (take note you tokyo star morons in greenside, how could you fuck up such a cool place and still call it tokyo star, complete insult to the memory)!!!!! It will be sorely missed whilst they "Renovate" and we can all only hope that they open again VERY soon and give us party starved Jozi mutha fukkas a place to call home again, at least for a few nights a week. The bi-monthly junk sales are also awesome, I got the COOLEST pair of Tails there for R100!!!!!-------> PLUS lots of other wicked cool stuffies such as AWESOME Depeche Mode Vinyl (and you all know how much I love my Depeche Mode vinyl), COOL stuffies for Roxanne, etc etc etc... DAMN the Hawaii 5:0, they interfering with our Right to Party!!!!

This is the message that Shaun sent out to the members of the Facebook group of Go Go Bar:
"I am sorry to say that go-go bar will be closed for renovations. As you may or may not know...all the bars in Newtown were shut down due to various loopholes in the law. We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate everyones support...we love you long time!!!"
Well, WE love YOU long time!!!

My Weekend, Bloody Beetroots, Police Raids, John and Jehn, Slumdog Millionaire.....

Okay, so, this weekend was eventful, in fact the last few weeks have been eventful in the extreme, car accidents, friend passing in motorcycle accident (R.I.P. Mike), divorce, girlfriend leaving (come back Kitten), work issues, my first remix, radio show getting canned (temporarily, I will be back on air SOON, fear not), Babu, police raid, Bloody Beetroots, Slumdog Millionaire,

Let me start at the beginning, a good place to start of course:)

As some of you may or may not know, I am busy going through a divorce, it's not a bitter one, its kinda amicable, we are getting on famously. Well, we went to see Slumdog Millionaire last night, what an amazing movie, it had everything, kid covered in shit, eyes being scooped out, love, death, guns and a Bollywood dance, yeah, freaking awesome!! I have travelled through India and it was amazing to see that they got India and Mumbai in particular absolutely spot on!! However, when we were walking out some pompous voice was saying out loud for all and sundry to hear that he thought it was "So So" what an idiot, clearly he was trying to sound all cynical and educated and sophisticated, naturally failing at all of the above, all I need to say is: 8 Oscars (deserved), Freida Pinto (OMFG...hot hot hot), 71 other awards, so, the jokes on YOU you pompous pseudo intellectual prat!!!

Speaking of Pseudo Intellectual Prats, I give you BABU, now, I am as cultured as the next guy, well read, well versed in different musical cultures and have a very VERY broad based appreciation in music and its various forms, I am also well travelled, one of the many places I have visited is India, and have travelled the North extensively, including Amritsar where the Sikhs and the AWE inspiring Golden Temple can be found!! Well, two Indian blokes and two white guys from Cape Town have taken on the glorious Indian traditional music with the Tablas being the mainstay of the beat, the Drummer I will grant was WAY cool and amazing, nice chap too. The Tabla dude, a tall gangly hippy type from Cape Town was quite good, the bassist looked out of place and the guitarist a complete prat. I get annoyed when people are so far up their own arses that they feel the need to tell the crowd that if they want to talk they can go upstairs, annoyance number two, annoyance number 1 was telling me to turn down my music as he was afraid that I would scare people away before they were to play. Do NOT do that to a DJ, EVER!!!! <----Muppet!!! Annoyance number three was this eejit coming up to me after his show and asking me to turn down the music as he was trying to have a chat, FUCK OFF COCK!!! YOU go upstairs and have your chat!! And YES, Jo'burg IS a hectic city, and we like it that way. Annoyance number 4 was the 2 hour set that could have been 45 minutes. It was boring, full of neo hippy, fusion jazz wankery. I am so pleased for you that you spent decades learning your scales, the deft and nimble way that you showed us all that you had whilst leaning back and gazing imploringly at the concrete ceilings ala Jimmy Hendrix was for 15 minutes with the most mind numbingly dull solo I have ever had the mispleasure of sitting through, it was excruciating!! Oh, that solo was annoyance number 5.
Here's a transcript of some text messages between a fiend and I who was sitting upstairs chatting and who left the "gig" early: Me: Boring pretentious capetonian hippy wank music. The guitarist just tole the crowd that if they want to talk then go upstairs, what a fucktard.
Me: Fucking capetonians
Her: Haha what tossers! Later lovely :-)
Me: He also asked me to turn down my music as I was scaring people away with my chemical brothers, cockknocker. Why do I have to be civilized? Can't I hit him? hahahaha
Her: Fucking capetonians hit him! :@
Me: Hahaha, think I will, LOL!!!! Will they ever stop playing????
Me: It's been like 10 hours
Me: Of the same chord
Her: Just start playing :-)
Her: Hahahahaha
Me: Good idea, I am VERY tempted
Me: Death by babu
ends
(disclaimer: apologies to any Capetonians hurt in previous rant, I love you all)
Well, then the Hawaii 5:0 came aknocking, Pohlees raid, woooo, It's been years since I was in a raid, the last one I was involved in, I was kept behind by 3 huge policemen and beaten up for no reason!!! Anyhoo, I packed my shit up, got paid (thanks Shaun, you are wicked cool) and made my merry way home!!

Saturday night was the Bloody Beetroots at the Alexandra Theatre in Braamfontein, they were awesome, I recognised a lot of the tracks they played as I have been featuring them on my show for months, so that was cool. They were crazy good, the crowd went nuts, hands in the air, waving it like they just don't care..... madness ensued, I loved it!!
I was in my tails and creepers, looking suave and ready for the floor, and veritably I did get down to the funky twisted electro beat!!! Tweak them mutha fukkas!!!

Right, sunday morning came and went and I watched the Deer Hunter, what an amazing movie, starring a young Robert de Niro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep. An emotive and awesome movie, a classic. It hasn't really aged at all, it is still as powerful today as it was in 1978 when it was first screened. Another anti-Vietnam film, feeding the Americans zeitgeist and collective guilt about a war that was extremely unpopular there and the costs on the people involved and the people left behind. Russian Roulette, scary shit man!!!!
Naturally I was chilling and recovering from the night before when my phone rang three quaters of the way through the long film, at 12, I was supposed to be at my nieces birthday party at 10am, FUCK, I had forgotten!!!! IDIOT!!! anyhoo, finished watching the movie and went and spent an hour with my LOVELY niece Emma, absolute swetheart, Happy Birthday Emma!!

Well, that was my weekend, and in celebration of that fine fact, the lovely folk at Nile-On wanted me to share THIS with you, enjoy:

BABU

Babu (a two day showcase Friday 6th March & Sat 7th March)

The binding force that brings this band of four highly imaginative and proficient musicians together is respect. Respecting the music and sharing a love for some of the most invigorating improvisational sounds in Jazz over the last 60 years. Drawing inspiration from the searching spirit in Jazz, and its ability to tap into the more complex realms of human experience, the subconscious, perhaps mystical world. This desire to look into the depth of shared musical experience leads us to investigate the improvisational practices of Indian Classical music, which has had an extensive history with spirituality in music.Â

With great faith, love and a willing audience, the performance occasion can bring our minds together to test the depth of ecstasy in music and leave the room charged with exhilaration, respect and love for all life.

Ohh Crapp

Very bad news for fellow Bloggers, everybodies favourite Blog Ohh Crapp's Faisal's laptop has died which means he cannot blog for a while which sucks! He has set up a PayPal account should anybody feel inclined to donate anything to his fund, I think that someone who puts so much awesomeness into his blog and who gets SOOO much awesome music for all of us deserves a break and also for people to help him out.
It's probably my favourite blog, my morning routine involves getting into work, putting on my computer, checking my blog and immediately checking Ohh Crapp because without fail there is ALWAYS something awesome there to get!! He has introduced me to a great deal of new and grounbreaking music, AND he loves Royksopp!!!! What's not to like:)

Daft Punk get Tron job

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH PEOPLE, THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!! One of my FAVOURITE childhood memories, TRON, AWESOME movie, it's being REMADE and DAFT PUNK IS DOING THE SOUNDTRACK, My life is complete:

Faceless French dance music duo Daft Punk have landed the soundtrack to Disney's Tron remake.
The Harder Better Faster Stronger hitmakers, who appear onstage and in videos as robots, will record the tracks for TR2N in a new Los Angeles studio they have built.

The original 1982 science fiction classic featured a soundtrack from Wendy Carlos, a musician and composer who helped to popularise the Moog synthesiser as a musical instrument.
